AT&T and Verizon: Minorities Won't Get Broadband

If you're a minority and you want to get broadband access, don't expect to get it from AT&T and Verizon. A new report finds that both telcos "redline" minority neighborhoods by refusing to install fiber in them, while at the same time aggressively pursuing more affluent, non-minority neighborhoods.

DSL sucks anyway, as does Verizon and AT&T. DSL is slow, and often times it's not as simple as "laying more fiber". DSL service directly depends on how far a potential customer is from a C.O. (central office), and will never exceed 14,000 ft. Asking these corporations to build new facilities in blighted neighborhoods is like asking anyone to buy property in blighted neighborhoods (good luck).

In case you missed it, these two doom corporations are directly responsible for divulging the largest call database (and by extension, the largest DB of ANY kind) in the history of computing. Why would minorities, let alone ANYONE, want to give these corporations their money?

The reason that these corporations are trying to give it away so cheaply is because companies like Comcast are upping their bandwidth caps and are far exceeding the available bandwidth DSL offers.

In most cases, I would suggest getting a cable connection over DSL. It may be more expensive but the infrastructure is much newer and more reliable. Besides, if you can get cable TV in your home, it's more than likely you can get cable internet as well.
